My Personal Peeves At The Gym

Since joining a gym I have thoroughly enjoyed becoming fitter and the ego bust when people begin to compliment is the added bonus. The one problem that I have with going to the gym anytime before 8am or after 4pm is that it’s busy, and a busy gym has too many people. Whether you spend £10 or £50 on your gym membership there is certain etiquette that all gym members should adhere to.

A TOWEL IS YOUR BEST ACCESSORY

Cleaning down the equipment after yourself isn’t difficult, and to be honest it’s just plain hygienic. The last thing you want is someone else’s butt crack sweat were you’re going to put your hands. Wipe down the equipment after you’ve used it.

MACHINE HOVERING

One thing that gets under my skin is someone that hovers around you waiting for you to finish. Hovering around someone or staring is off-putting, not to mention creepy. Ask how many sets they have left instead and respect that persons personal space.

USING MOBILE PHONES ON MACHINES

Whether you’re sitting on your phone taking a selfie or texting, doing it between sets kills everyone’s mood. While you sit there doing nothing, someone else could be using that equipment. It becomes even more irritating for me when that person has clearly finished their sets and sits on the equipment hogging it for no reason at all. That also goes for those people who ‘reserve’ a piece of equipment by leaving their towel/phone/water bottle on the seat but have no intention of using that said piece of kit.

WEAR CLEAN GYM GEAR

If you’ve already worn a top to the gym, don’t wear it again if you haven’t washed it body odour is not pleasant. The number of times I have been adjacent to someone and the smell of dirty gym gear makes me retch.

PERSONAL HYGIENE

Yes, you’re at the gym and you’re definitely going to sweat but for goodness sake wear a good deodorant too. The smell of a workout is ok but the body odour that just seems to linger and makes your eyes bleed is just plain disgusting.

DON’T BE A GYM DOUCHE!

Tidy up after yourself! Once you’re done with your dumbbells put them away, take the weights off the barbell for the next person. Sadly as a general rule it’s usually the ‘gym bunnies’ that train hard forgetting leg day that are responsible for this.

Likewise, if you spill your drink don’t leave it there for someone else to dry up. Clean it up yourself or get a Personal Trainer to grab a mop!
