Managing Stress Through COVID-19

LIFESTYLE | APRIL 2020

We are in very trying times. The past few weeks have been unnerving and things seem to be changing by the hour. It’s easy to get a little overwhelmed and worry constantly about things that you don’t have little control over.

I get it, and we’re all in this together.

We’re being advised to stay home as much as possible and engage in social distancing due to the Corona Virus. It’s extremely easy to be riddled with anxiety during these times and it can be hard to focus on that silver lining and let stress take the wheel. While we should be cautious and take this very seriously there are ways to stay sane and manage stress.

While it may seem impossible, there are a number of ways to manage stress and stay positive during COVID-19 social distancing and isolation!

GET MOVING

With more and more gyms closing it can be easy to slip out of your daily workout routine. However, exercise is one of the best ways to boost your endorphins and make you feel better.

Many apps and Youtube channels are offering free workouts so you don’t have to sacrifice your sweat while you’re home. My local gym has created home workout videos and I’m sent a link each day.

You can also download free workout apps like Nike Training, Shred and Home Workout. Why not check into your Instagram (If you have an account)? Many Personal Trainers are offering workout videos too. Remember, they have a living to make too so why not support them!

CREATE A SCHEDULE

With many things cancelled or closed, schedules can go out the window especially when you’re isolating yourself and turning into a bit of a hermit crab, it’s easy to stay up late and binge on Netflix…only to sleep in and do it all over again.

While this sounds fun short term, the best way to maintain a positive attitude is to create a schedule for yourself.

Get up at a reasonable time and make the effort of getting dressed fully. When I say fully I mean making the effort. I have been in isolation for 4 weeks now and it’s quite easy to just dress in a T-Shirt and joggers (sweat pants to North Americans) and you’re done. Get up and dress in smarter clothes, maybe a casual shirt, a spray of cologne/perfume etc.

If you’re a ‘work from home’ person work in a designated workspace just like you would do if you were still in the office. Give yourself regular breaks and know when to turn work-mode off. Mix in a walk or a workout and take a lunch break!

CATCH UP ON ALL THOSE CHORES YOU’VE BEEN MEANING TO DO

Why not use isolation as the perfect kick-start to getting around to doing all those chores you’ve been meaning to do. It’s the perfect time to Spring clean.

I have used the time to redecorate my entire house. I’ve had the DIY stuff in for months and was saving it for the Easter long Bank Holiday weekend but have utilised my time by spring cleaning the whole house.

Why not do some DIY? Clean out those cupboards? Bake a cake? Draw a picture?

START A NEW HOBBY OR LEARN A NEW SKILL

As humans there are always things that we say we want to try but claim we don’t have the time. Well, now we do! Pick up painting, make jewellery, learn how to shoot a camera ready for those holiday travels again, learn another language, take music lessons, or even start a blog!  Find something that you enjoy and let yourself dive into it.

Find out if there are online classes for your chosen interest. At the moment there are all kinds of courses that are offering their Premium memberships for free.

Now is the time to get those creative juices flowing and try new things.
