Fighting Wanderlust Through COVID-19

There’s A Frog On The Porch

April 2020

Right now as I’m writing this blog I should be on an plane flying to Croatia!

While the vast majority of flights have been grounded for the next month or two that doesn’t mean you should stop the travel inspiration from coming! Having something to look forward to is a great way to fight off the blues.

You may not be able to book that flight now but you can lay the groundwork for where you want to go, where you want to stay, and all sorts of things. Take time to read reviews of restaurants and sites.

HERE ARE MY TIPS FOR FIGHTING THE URGE FOR TRAVEL THROUGH COVID-19

What Kind Of Trip Would You Like To Take?

There are so many different types of holidays. Think about what is going to curb that wanderlust you’re feeling right now. Is it going to be a tropical holiday on one of those Indian Ocean Islands? Or maybe you want to go on a safari in Africa, Or maybe you want to drive the Great Ocean Road in Australia; or perhaps it’s something smaller, like a destination that you just haven’t been to before, like my cancelled trip to Croatia. The options are endless.

This is also a great time to buckle down and save money for your future travels since we’re not out social spending.

Explore Flight Paths

I do this constantly, isolation or not! I’m fortunate enough to live in a part of The UK were there is a lot of air traffic that flies overhead en-route from the Middle-East and Europe to the America’s and using a ‘Flight Tracker’ app I become engrossed in it all.

Use Skyscanner/Kayak to see possible routes to anywhere in the world. While you may not be travelling right this second it’s fun to see what’s out there and possible flights you can take in the future.

Try An Online Museum Tour

With many museums closing many of them are offering virtual tours. From what I have discovered through research Google has teamed up with over 2000 museums and galleries to bring you online exhibits. From the British Museum in London to the Guggenheim Museum in New York, to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

Use the Google Arts & Culture link and browse the menus.

Or, use streaming platforms to watch history documentaries or natural history shows like Planet Earth.

Create Something With Your Travel Photographs

If you’re anything like me, you have a heap of travel photos just sitting on your computer or your phone. Yet they never actually get printed.

Why not use this time to have them printed and create something with them. Whether it be a scrapbook of a trip, a travel journal, hanging them on your wall, or creating a cool display – get creative! There’s something special about looking back on photos of past trips and walking down memory lane. I created a travel wall in my kitchen and purchased a world vinyl wall sticker and framed the map.

Set Yourself A Virtual Travel Fitness Challenge

Although I’m not a hard-core fitness fan I used to frequent the local gym six days a week albeit for an hour to keep my fitness levels up. However, with the closure of public places I needed to find a way to challenge myself. Some can do this by home workouts, others have home gyms but I haven’t the motivation to work out at home.

I stumbled across theconqueror website purely by chance whilst researching fitness tips. It offers various ‘virtual’ challenges anything from a 26 mile marathon through the Inca Trail in Peru, from the Southern Alps to the Ocean in New Zealand, or, Route 66 in the USA.

These virtual challenges can either be run, walked, cycled etc and you set the time limit goal to achieve said challenge. Upon completion you are sent a medal for your efforts!
