Airline Alliances

There’s A Frog On The Porch

Travel | November 2025

An airline alliance is an aviation industry arrangement between two or more airlines agreeing to cooperate on a substantial level.

Alliances can offer cohesive marketing branding to assist travelers in making inter-airline code share connections within countries. This branding may entail the implementation of standardised aircraft liveries among member airlines.

Airlines alliances can bring several advantages to the traveller:

  • lower prices due to lowered operational costs for a given route.
  • more departure times to choose from on a given route.
  • more destinations within easy reach.
  • shorter travel times as a result of optimised transfers.
  • a wider range of airport lounges shared with alliance members
  • faster mileage rewards by earning miles for a single account on several different carriers.
  • round-the-world tickets, enabling travellers to fly over the world for a relatively low price.

I am a strong believer in alliance members and I personally have loyalty to the One World programme which British Airways is a member (I am a frequent flyer card holder)  However, in addition I have membership to a rival alliance with Star Alliance.

Holding an airlines frequent flyer card has numerous benefits. Not only does it allow me to collect and redeem points with that said airlines programme but one can also collect/redeem points with member airlines within that alliance programme.

In addition, one can also purchase airline tickets for any member airline of that said programme to ensure smooth travel and efficiency. By holding a frequent flyer card also allows access to airport lounges across the globe along with extra travel perks such as increased baggage allowances or free upgrades in over sales circumstances.
